One of the best known and most important references on the life of Christ ever written, Alfred Edersheim’s “The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah” is a storehouse of information on the background of the New Testament.

This classic work successfully portrays the streets, the marketplaces, the religious conflicts, the people, and the places of Jesus’ earthly ministry. Edersheim divides his work into five sections, or books: Book 1 “The Preparation for the Gospel” Introductory historical, religious, political, and cultural material based on the author’s extensive knowledge of Jewish lore and customs.

John the Baptist and his message, and the birth and baptism of Jesus. Book 3 “From Jordan to the Mount of Transfiguration” Thirty-seven chapters explore the miracles and teachings of Jesus’ early ministry. Book 4 “The Descent into the Valley of Humiliation” A history of the latter part of Jesus’ ministry from the Transfiguration to the journey to Jerusalem. Appendices Valuable background material on Jewish history, tradition, and law”.

The value in this study is to learn the culture, geographic, political, and tradition setting of the Jews in Jerusalem during the time Jesus Christ lived in that area. It sheds light on many encounters he had with both the common people and the Jewish religious leaders of the day.

A good deal of the book deals with the physical geography of Israel and records the sight and sounds Christ would have encountered on his walk from Galilee to Jerusalem, for example. I recommend it for any serious student of scripture. When did Jesus know He is the Son of God?

What did He know, when and how!!!!!!!

This book has credible answers to questions we have wondered about all our Christian lives. I haven’t gotten to that part of the book but I can see it clearly even now.

Also marvelous things such as: The flocks of sheep had to be kept in the wilderness and never allowed near a town except for one flock. The shepherds who tended it were considered banned from Temple worship by the priests because they of necessity couldn’t keep the Law and these are the very ones to whom the First Advent was announced!!!!

David Lee has in his review pointed out that Edersheim used some “higher criticism” in developing this book, so be forewarned. The first part of the book is incredibly rough to read and if you find it unbearable just go to another chapter. It is so very worthwhile. Use a highlighter as you read it! You will want to find the treasures again! This is a rather famous reference book, NOT a “story of Jesus” per se. As far as a book goes, it’s been a tough one to read, and I often recalled the adage “you get what you pay for”.

The book seems to be missing sentences here and there but makes up for it by repeating whole paragraphs almost randomly. Maybe more importantly, being a reference book, the reader will miss out if he can’t readily refer to citations and definitions. There are a metric ton of abbreviations in every chapter, and I found myself skimming over portions because they were made unwieldy to read.

What I’m looking forward to, assuming I can or will continue the struggle of reading this enormously dry but informative, scholarly book, is the deeper understanding of how ancient Jewish culture shaped the philosophy and life of Christ Jesus.

This is not an easy read.

It was originally written inand although I have the updated version, it is still in old English. Aside from that, this book is an amazing book. Albert Edersheim has not only covers the life of Jesus, but the background information throughout the book gives you such a deeper understanding of why Jesus did and said some of the wn He did.

I have tried to read it cover to cover and didn’t finish. But I have gone to it many times for information as Edersneim prepare for various bible studies. It is a must for anyone who desires to know more about Jesus. This is the best book ever written by man!

Alfred Edersheim

I love the reverent, loving and scholarly way this was written. Everyone should read this wonderful book! The author paints a full picture of the area and times of Jesus with wonderful insight and psychology of human behavior of the people in the stories. I feel like I am living among them as alrfed read.
